When doing a lower intensity exercise say walking on a treadmill at an incline, with heart rate at 130 BPM. you are burning about 90% fat and 10% from other sources. With High intensity cardio, you are burning about 75% fat and 25% from other sources.
Lets look at the numbers , when walking on a treadmill for 30 minutes lets say you burn about 300 calories. 270 calories will come from fat and 30 from other sources. Lets say you burn the same amount of calories during a high intense cardio session. You burn 225 calories from fat and 75 calories from other sources, however, in taking the time to do the high intensity cardio, it will always take less time to get to 300 calories burned than it would the lower intensity cardio.
So when it comes to cardio, I always say do what you like doing best. You are more likely to stick with it in the long run. Make working out fun, don’t think of it as work because you are doing your self a favor by getting exactly the body you want! Whether it is walking in the morning everyday for 45 minutes, a spin class or an exercise video at home.
So when it comes to cardio, high intensity or low intensity. It all works just in different ways to your body. I like to do high intensity cardio the most, especially on days i feel a little more stressed than usual.
