I deserve this cupcake- Why Diets fail?
In this article, I am going to give you the most valuable piece of advice you will ever receive for dieting. Your mindset will be forever changed and more willing to follow through with your diet. If you are reading this chances are you have said a few of these:
- I worked out today I can eat this…
- I have been good all week I can eat this…
- I will be the only one on a diet at the party, ill give in for just one night…
- It was a hard day, I deserve this glass of wine…
- This list can go on forever.
While I am not opposed to the occasionally and strategic cheat when on a diet. I am opposed into giving in when your body is not ready to accept the cheat or if it is not apart of the plan.
While it is important to have the right diet plan, the right motivation and the best support around you. The one that that will make you fail when all else is going great, is boundaries. It is the one thing that will stop you over and over and over from hitting your weight loss goals, or better yet keep you from holding on to that weight loss. Have you lost weight and then gained it back?
If you have ever asked yourself:
- Why can’t I stay on track ?
- Why can’t I keep this weight off?
- Why is this so hard for me?
I am going to connect why boundaries are important for dieting and why you should have them in a min, but first I want to explain what boundaries are.
a line that marks the limits of an area; a dividing line.
When setting boundaries with work, for example, you tend of think of: Not answering work related calls after certain hours, or only checking email during work time. This creates healthy boundaries, so that you are able to enjoy your work more and not burn out, so to speak.
Let’s say you start with said boundaries for work, but as time goes on you start giving into to after hour work calls and checking your work email throughout the day, even after work hours. What tends to happen?
- Lose time with your family
- feel like you are always working
- creates unhealthy relationships outside of work
- and more I am sure.
Then, burnout sets in, you are always working and not enjoying your time outside of work because you are always thinking of it. If you were to follow those boundaries all along, you may be able to enjoy more things outside of work like time with family and friends. You get to go back to work the next day or after the weekend, fully recharged and ready to tackle anything that comes your way.
Boundaries are important.
Let’s relate this to dieting now. Like I said before this is the most important thing when it comes to dieting and losing weight. This is the sole reason why diets fail!
You are ready to lose weight, have the perfect diet plan, 100% motivated, you are sticking to your plan, not missing a day at the gym, diet is 100 % perfect, you are losing weight….then what happens??
- a work related dinner
- cocktails with friends
- birthday party
You know what I am talking about, those events that happen right in the middle of your perfect dieting plan. My clients have them on a weekly basis and this is what we focus on, boundaries.
What boundaries have you set for yourself that you CANNOT give into?
- giving up sugar
- giving up alcohol
- portion control
- working out 5-6 days/ week
oh, you haven’t set any, stop RIGHT now and make a list of at least 3 things you need to stick with NO MATTER what comes your way. if you need a great tool for keeping those goals in your vision at all times, check out my vision board or diet planners I have created for you guys.
My list looks something like this:
- give up excess sugar
- workout 6 days per week, with one day of rest/working rest.
- no alcohol
This is a solid list. Let me make this clear, this is not the list that is going to make you lose weight the diet is specific enough for that. These are just 3 things I am holding myself accountable for. These are my boundaries for my own diet, to help keep me on track even when I have events or bumps in the diet road, so to speak.
Why Boundaries are important for dieting?
The easiest answer is that they keep you on track for the long run, but it also increases your confidence and self control, which let’s face it, with out those two things, you will gain that weight right back. I promise, it will happen.
The more you give into your boundaries, the less confidence you will have in making your own decisions, which whether you know it or not, changes the way you feel about your self.
A strong will power is SO important in keeping a healthy lifestyle. Without it, you will just eat, drink and do whatever you want. Am I aright? Here come the pounds and you are right where you started.
When you stick to your boundaries 100% of the time, your confidence increases like you wouldn’t believe. You will feel UNSTOPPABLE and no one or anything will stand in the way of your goals.
You will hear the occasional, peer pressure , come on its just one drink or you can give into your diet one night. DON’T!! They aren’t the ones not feeling confident in your clothes or look in the mirror and wish your body looked a little bit different. People will stand in the way of your weight loss goals, especially the ones closest to you believe it or not.
Make your diet Boundaries and STICK TO THEM! I promise this ONE rule will change the way you diet forever!
