Stop weighing yourself and stop using the scale…Do this instead
Although you know a number is just a number, it’s hard not to worry when you see the scale jump a pound or two overnight or—worse—during the same day. But take a deep breath: Most weight fluctuations are normal.
Since most of us can’t eat enough in a day or two to actually gain 5 or 10 pounds, if you notice a dramatic increase on the scale, chances are it’s due to water, says Anita Petruzzelli, M.D..
The typical new client of mine has a dramatic two week weight loss and in the 3 or 4th week the scale seems to not change. For about 18 days to 3 weeks, its what like to call a “catch up plateau”. The weight starts going back down after that small plateau.
However, I ask my clients not to weight themselves all the time. I do ask them to measure inches, that is where the change happens. Even if your weight doesn’t change, your inches ALWAYS will. As long as you are following the right diet and exercise.
Another way to measure body fat is with this body fat monitor. Its a great product that I have used on my clients. Click on the picture to find out more.
Why your weight doesn’t change?
There are many reasons that your weight may be stabling for a short period time:
- Water retention
- Building lean body tissue
- Lean body tissue is smoother on your body as opposed to fat. Bulk is not muscle, bulk is fat.
- Estrogen is stored in fat, sometimes when we lose weight. We have excess estrogen, which makes it hard to lose weight. Give your body a little time to catch up especially if you have lost a lot of weight.
- Lady hormones and time of the month ovulation vs menstrual
- too much salt
- not enough water intake
- Letting your body catch up with excess skin.
The ones you do not want to hear:
- Bad diet
- Bad workouts
When you are doing all the right things with your eating and working out as well. You will be losing body fat. Weighing on a scale doesn’t always show that. If a client comes to me and says, I am not losing weight. I ask them to measure and 9 times out of 10 they have lost inches even though their weight is the same.
If you are going a few weeks with out the scale and your inches not changing. Then there needs to be a diet and workout intervention. You need to quickly figure out what about your diet isn’t working. ( Grab my 21 day reboot to get back on track!)
