Even if you go to sleep at night, your fat burning metabolism never does! Have you ever woke up and lost weight? (Side fact: did you know that 84% of fat burning happens thru respiration?) Think about it, that’s 8-Ish hours of fat burning time, you need to fuel it as best as possible to help it thrive. When Hilary swank was filming “Million Dollar Baby” she would get up every 3 hours and drink a protein shake, she was super lean too! In order to help you burn fat at night, here are snacks you can eat before bed to lose weight.
Even if you’re lying on the couch, your body is always burning calories to keep your involuntary nervous system working, pumping blood, breathing, digesting food, and all the other life-sustaining jobs it performs. As a reader of my blog, you’ve probably already heard that the more muscle you have, the more calories your body is burning at rest.
Consume the bulk of your calories, particularly carbohydrates, during daytime hours and less in the early evening. You’ll go to bed with less of the hormone insulin in your blood, so your body can metabolize fat for energy while you sleep.
“The key to fat loss is not only to burn it or get rid of it, but also to stop making it,” says Robert Zembroski, functional medicine doctor, and clinical nutritionist. “One of the fastest ways to get rid of body fat is to prevent surges of insulin at night, which will take unused calories and store them as fat. If you have to eat at night, choose a piece of lean protein and a side of salad or greens that will prevent big surges of insulin. By doing so, you increase the amount of growth hormone released after you fall asleep, which will cause the fat cells to release their fat to be used for energy,” says Dr. Zembroski.
Sleeping in total darkness releases the hormone melatonin, which is responsible for a good night’s sleep. Melatonin also assists in the production of “brown fat” which is key in metabolizing calories.
6 Snacks before bed to help you lose weight!
Protein Shake – Casein protein is more slow digestive than whey, so you are getting a steady amount of amino acids throughout the night. In other words, casein maxes out your satiety compared to whey, although both will work the same way.
Shake up a protein drink if you feel hungry in the evening. Not only will the protein help you build lean muscle mass, but it’ll aid in muscle and cell repair.
Cottage cheese- with just the right amount of protein and fat this is a great snack you can eat before bed to lose weight. Cottage cheese also contains slow digestive casein protein with helps keep you fuller longer. Just don’t eat the whole tub 🙂
Tuna or salmon with celery – Tuna is so easy to prep, with it being in a can. I like to add some spices and Greek yogurt to make it taste good and pair it will celery sticks. Try This awesome recipe below!

Eggs The perfect protein. Eggs are a low calorie, high protein with the perfect amount of fat to keep your hunger at bay for a while. It has all the essential amino acids to keep a steady flow of fat burning power over night.
Try eating foods rich in the amino acid, tryptophan, which includes turkey, chicken, and eggs. This protein can help to promote relaxation and sleep. In addition, proteins cause the body to use more calories during digestion than carbohydrates, which may further improve the body’s ability to burn fat
Greek yogurt– No I am not talking about foo foo key lime, sugar filled chocolate sprinkles yogurt. (My clients hear this a lot). When you are looking for a greek yogurt look for the one with the highest amount of protein and the lowest sugars. My Favorites are Fage Greek yogurt and Oikos Triple zero
Low fat cheese and raw veggies Regular cheese is high in saturated fat, which is bad for your arteries, opt for the reduced fat cheese. Cheese is low or no carb pair it with some no carb green veggies like broccoli, celery or cucumbers. Such a refreshing snack!
Almonds/nuts- With the perfect amount of protein and fat to keep you satisfied. Almonds pack an awesome fat burning punch to your metabolism while you are sleeping
One handful of walnuts and almonds can increase your melatonin levels and promote better sleep. They’re also good for your heart.
