In trying to get my clients to eat healthy, I am shocked what they post in our accountability group. I shouldn’t be. In the world of food advertising we can literally be told that anything is healthy. Companies can be very sneaky and misleading in their advertising. Low sugar products contain artificial sweeteners. Gluten free products tend to be over processed. I try to educate as much as possible. Here are a list of foods you should never eat.
1. Sugary Drinks
Do you call it pop or soda? Its doesn’t matter stop drinking it. There is absolutely no nutritional reason for you to drink pop ( I call it pop 🙂 ). 1 can of soda has 35 grams of sugar. Not only will it spike your blood sugar and enable fat storage if there is too much sugar in your blood, but itwhen consumed in large amounts, can drive insulin resistance in the body and is strongly linked to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. It is also associated with various serious diseases, including type 2 diabetes and heart disease
Alternatives: Drink water, soda water, coffee or tea instead. Adding a slice of lemon to water or soda water can add some taste if you don’t like it plain.
2. Most Pizzas
No! Why did you have to say pizza!? A high carb, high fat and low protein meal is not ideal for weight loss. It’s so easy for us to call up and order a pizza. Life gets busy and we just want convenience.
Alternatives: Cauliflower or chickpea crust pizza, with lots of veggies and protein
3. Most Fruit Juices
There is so much added sugar in these drinks. Widely known as healthy but not ideal to get that body you want. Most servings of fruit juice have as much as a pop (or soda) “I take if for the vitamins.” Well stop, take a multivitamin instead.
Think of orange juice. How many oranges does it take for just ONE glass of juice? Think of all the calories that went into that cup. *Mind Blown*
Alternatives: water with some fruit infused inside or just eat a piece of fruit
4. Industrial Vegetable Oils and Margarine
These can be defined as refined vegetable oils, such as soybean oil, corn oil, cottonseed oil and canola oil.
These oils are very high in omega-6 fatty acids, which humans never consumed in such large amounts before.
There are many serious concerns with these oils. They are highly sensitive to oxidation and cause increased oxidative stress in the body. They have also been linked to increased risk of cancer
Alternatives: Use healthier fats like coconut oil, butter, extra virgin olive oil or avocado oil instead.
Margarine used to be considered a healthy alternative to butter.
If you have it in your fridge throw it away immediately
Margarine is a highly processed pseudo-food that has been engineered to look and taste like butter.
It is loaded with artificial ingredients, and is usually made with industrial vegetable oils that have been hydrogenated to make them more solid. This increases their trans fat content significantly.
Keep in mind that manufacturers are allowed to label their products with “no trans fat” as long as it contains less than 0.5 grams per serving, which is still a significant amount.
Alternatives: Use real butter instead, preferably from grass-fed cows.
5. Pastries, Cookies and Cakes
Kind of goes in the pop category, if you want to lose weight don’t eat it. Add in lots of fat and carbs and you have yourself a perfect cocktail for weight gain. Yes they taste good that’s the point! if you want an eye opener watch sugar coated on netflix. It will make you never want to eat sugar again.
6. Gluten-Free Junk Foods
Gluten intolerance is an autoimmune disorder, so why does everyone have it these days? Seriously, do you know what a gluten intolerance individual goes through when they eat it. They are running to the bathroom. How did this become a diet? I have a problem with all the gluten free snacks that are out there now. People are replacing the gluten-containing foods with processed junk foods that happen to be gluten-free.
Alternatives: Shop the perimeter at your grocery store. Tip: don’t eat the flowers 🙂
Yogurt can be incredibly healthy, But there is only about two products I will allow my clients to have on their plans. Most are high in sugar which contradicts to whole point of a healthy snack. Then came the Greek yogurt fad and the entire industry jumped on that bandwagon. Its MADNESS! Fage yogurt is the only yogurt I approve of, even oiko zero seems to be OK by label
8. Ice Cream
Dammit Monica! Not this too! Butter and sugar all rolled into a tub of goo, in which, you don’t know how to portion yeah sorry get rid of it. While we are at it, I am just going to say gelato and sorbet are on this list too 🙂 My clients like to find loopholes, gotta cover everything. I want you to remember this. You have been allowed cheats your whole life, now is the time to buckle down and eat right to get that body you want
9. Candy Bars
Why are we even eating these as adults still? Candy bars are incredibly unhealthy. They are high in sugar, refined wheat flour and processed fats. They are also very low in essential nutrients. Processed foods like candy bars are generally engineered to be super tasty (so you eat more), and have been designed so that it’s very easy to eat them quickly.
Alternatives: real high-cocoa dark chocolate.
10. Processed Cheese
Those who know me, can confirm I am a cheese fanatic. But the real kind Regular cheese is healthy. It is loaded with nutrients, and a single slice of cheese contains all the same nutrients as an entire glass of milk/ However, processed cheese products are nothing like regular cheese. They are mostly made with filler ingredients that are combined and engineered to have a similar look and texture as cheese. Cheese is healthy, but processed cheese is not. Read labels, and make sure that the cheese you’re eating is actually cheese.
Alternatives: Eat real cheese instead.
11. Most Fast Food Meals
The fast food industry is making a comeback on this one. They are adding more healthy things to the menu. They just aren’t quite there yet. Generally speaking, “fast food” chains serve only junk foods. The majority of the food they offer is mass-produced, highly engineered junk food with very little nutritional value.
These places are often very cheap, but keep in mind that junk food costs your body twice.
For every penny you save there, chances are that it’s going to cost you many times more in the future. Poor health is expensive.
Alternatives: Fortunately, all sorts of healthy fast food places have started to appear. Panera is one great example.
12. High-Calorie “Coffee” Drinks
Coffee is healthy and and loaded with antioxidants The added fat and sugar whipped up into a frappe drink is not.
Studies also show that coffee drinkers have a lower risk of serious diseases, like type 2 diabetes and Parkinson’s .
If your “coffee” has a ton of artificial creamer and sugar, then it is NOT good for you.
It is loaded with liquid, empty calories, and will be just as unhealthy as any other sugar-sweetened beverage.
Alternatives: Drink plain coffee instead. Black is best, but small amounts of heavy cream or full-fat milk are fine as well.
When it comes to eating healthy, just be very aware what you are eating. Every time I am unsure about what is in the product I flip it over and look at the ingredients. I teach my clients whats good and whats not. If you don’t know what to look for then how to you know? Shop the perimeter of the stores and you will find mostly healthy foods if you wander into the inner isles there can be a lot of grey area. I am always giving away free resources in my Free weight loss group, I would love for you to join!
